Google Fiber opens up in Charlotte

Google Fiber has opened up sign-ups for residents and businesses in Charlotte, North Carolina, 18 months after it said it would roll out its high-speed internet service there.

Google is launching in the Highland Creek neighbourhood of the city, offering fiber broadband at speeds of up to 1,000 Mbps, a TV package and the option of a ‘Fiber Phone’ add-on.

“It will take time, but we’re working hard to bring Fiber to as many neighbourhoods as possible in Charlotte. We’ll be opening new neighbourhoods for signups as we complete network construction in those areas,” said Mary Ellen Player, city manager, Google Fiber Charlotte.

Google announced plans in January 2015 to launch Google Fiber in 18 more US cities across four new metro areas – Atlanta, Charlotte, Nashville and Raleigh-Durham.

Google kicked off its Fiber initiative six years ago in Kansas City and has now connected cities across the country.

Last month Google said it is “exploring the possibility” of rolling out Fiber to Dallas, while earlier this year it also said it would launch in San Francisco and Huntsville.
