Dame Caroline Dinenage elected chair of the Culture, Media and Sport Committee

Dame Caroline Dinenage MP has been appointed the chair of the Culture, Media and Sport Committee, replacing Julian Knight who stepped down from the role following serious sexual assault allegations. 

The conservative MP for Gosport was elected into the role yesterday May 17. She takes up position with immediate effect and will serve to the end of the current Parliament.

The election results was announced in the Chamber following a ballot of the whole House, which she took 198 of the winning votes. She beats MPs Damian Collins and Damian Green who were also on the ballot paper .

Dinenage was previously appointed minister of state for Digital and Culture in 2020. She also served as minister of State at the Department of Health and Social Care, as well as, Parliamentary under secretary of State at the Department for Work and Pensions.

Dinenage said, “I’m delighted to be given the chance to lead the committee in standing up for the culture, media and sport sectors, which are hugely important both economically and for communities across the country. I’m looking forward to getting down to scrutinising the Government to ensure it delivers on everything from gambling regulation and football governance reform through to bolstering support for our world-renowned creative industries.”
