Viaplay launches in UK
Viaplay Group has launched its Viaplay streaming service in the UK. Viewers can choose two packages: the Film & Series package focused on Nordic storytelling with more than 1,000 hours of award-winning Viaplay Originals and curated third-party content, or the Total package that also includes live sports.
The direct-to-consumer packages are priced at £3.99 and £14.99 per month respectively, with a seven-day free trial for the Film & Series package and a monthly price of £11.99 for Total customers signing a 12-month contract.
In the UK, Viaplay is supported by devices and platforms, including major Smart TV brands; iOS and Android smartphones and tablets; Chromecast, Apple TV, Android TV, Amazon Fire TV and Google TV; and PC and Mac. Viaplay is also available online.
Viaplay Originals available at launch include the Nordic noir series Cell 8, Fenris, Honour, Partisan, Those Who Kill, Harmonica, Love Me and Pernille. The line-up also includes a slate of factual programming and third party content including movies.
Viaplay has ramped up its plans for the UK following the acquisition of sports outfit Premier. The company is currently talking to UK-based producers about scripted projects.
Sports content includes all European Qualifiers for the UEFA EURO and FIFA World Cup played by the Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland men’s national football teams, along with the UEFA Nations League and friendlies, until 2028.
Viaplay will also show LaLiga, Scottish Cup, Scottish League Cup and Coppa Italia football; BKT United Rugby Championship, Rugby Football League and TOP 14 rugby; NHL, IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship, Champions Hockey League and Elite Ice Hockey League; CEV volleyball; KSW mixed martial arts; EHF handball; ISU figure skating and speed skating; and World Athletics Continental Tour Gold and Indoor Tour.
Anders Jensen, Viaplay Group President and CEO, said: “Viaplay has so much to offer UK viewers. Starting today, subscribers can enjoy original storytelling that has won prizes around the world, attractive third-party content from all Nordic countries and beyond, and top-class local and international sports – all through one competitively priced service. This launch is great news for viewers and a milestone for our company. Nordic noir is just the beginning for Viaplay in the UK.”
Scottish League sponsorship
To coincide with today’s launch of its UK streaming service, Viaplay has taken over the title sponsor of the Scottish League Cup from Premier TV, which it acquired earlier this year. Having taken control of Premier’s existing assets, Viaplay now has live rights and title sponsorship of the event until the end of the 2026/27 season.
Reinforcing Viaplay’s presence in the Scottish soccer market, the streamer also has rights to the Scottish Cup. Fans can also follow the Scotland men’s team in the qualifiers for Euro 2024, FIFA World Cup 2026 and Euro 2028, as well as UEFA Nations League and friendly matches.
Neil Doncaster, SPFL chief executive, said: “The Scottish League Cup has been a success for many years and Viaplay’s coverage and support of this competition until at least 2026/27 is very welcome indeed. We are looking forward to the exciting Viaplay Cup semi-finals in January and the final in February – all games which can be watched live and exclusively on Viaplay.”
