Facebook Watch app discontinued on Apple TV
Facebook Watch has reportedly been discontinued on Apple’s TV OS.
According to 9to5Mac, Apple TV users no longer have access to Facebook’s dedicated video platform with the app being shut down by Facebook with its most recent update. The report notes that the app is still available on the App Store, but users are encountered with an error message upon launching Facebook Watch.
Facebook Watch first launched on Apple TV in 2017 as part of the social media platform’s big push into video across mobile, PC and TV. It invested heavily in gaming, signing exclusive deals with a number of top streamers who had made their names on Twitch.
However in recent times, Facebook’s parent company Meta has become more preoccupied with growing its ‘metaverse’ business and being a leader in VR. As such a number of once promising initiatives have fallen by the wayside. Earlier this month, the company confirmed that it is to discontinue its Portal brand of smart home and TV devices as a consumer brand.
With Google-owned YouTube showing no signs of relenting as the de facto home of creator generated video content, it would be of little surprise to see Facebook Watch similarly slip into the annals of history.
