Discovery acquires Golf Channel Latin America
Discovery has continued to build out its golf portfolio with the acquisition of 24 hour pay TV network Golf Channel Latin America.
The broadcaster said that adding Golf Channel Latin America will expand its golf media business to more than 10 million subscribers across 17 markets in the region. Discovery’s global golf portfolio includes GOLFTV powered by PGA Tour, Golf Digest and an exclusive content deal with golf icon Tiger Woods.
Alex Kaplan, president and general manager of Discovery Golf said: “As Discovery continues to grow its offering and engagement with golf fans around the world, we are excited to be expanding our offering in Latin America to supercharge our golf ambitions across the region.
“Combining the forces of leading golf destinations such as Golf Channel Latin America, GOLFTV and Golf Digest, in addition to Discovery’s extensive brand portfolio and reach, will create an engine for golf content that offers significant opportunities to build scale across every platform.”
Fernando Medin, president of Discovery Latin America/US Hispanic said: “The incorporation of Golf Channel Latin America into Discovery’s portfolio will solidify our brand offering by adding golf to the already wide range of content we offer our viewers. By adding Golf Channel Latin America, we are joining our efforts to the global strategy of making Discovery the true all-screen home of golf. Enlarging Discovery’s golf portfolio in the region will allow us to better serve a passionate and growing audience and explore opportunities within new and existing partners.”
Elsewhere in golf, Sports Business Journal has estimated that the PGA Tour will make an estimated US$700 million per year in the US for its next set of broadcast contracts for between 2022-30.
The report said that CBS and NBC will increase their financial commitment by roughly 60%, while the Golf Channel will increase its commitment by “more than double.”
