Vodafone teams up with WDR for 5G TV trial

The trial will roll out in Cologne

Vodafone Deutschland has teamed up with public broadcaster WDR to test the delivery of media library content over 5G, enabling viewers to receive 4K resolution video over wireless networks.

The goal of the trial is to test the resilience of delivery of high-resolution content to mobile devices.

For the purposes of the trial, WDR is transmitting content via a 5G test infrastructure operated by Vodafone from the broadcaster’s production facilities.

Over the course of the trial, which is scheduled to last until the end of 2020, the pair will test the reception of TV and media library content on smartphones and tablets over 5G.

To begin with the partners will test data transmission at Vodafone’s 5G lab in Düsseldorf and 5G mobile lab in Aldenhoven. Later, transmission will begin at WDR’s campus in Cologne.
