Vimeo to roll out adaptive streaming for 4K
Online video portal Vimeo is to roll out adaptive 4K streaming across its platform, making the service available to all users early in the first quarter of next year.
Vimeo will introduce 4K within its embedded player and its Vimeo On Demand service. The company will upgrade its player to incorporate adaptive streaming, which will enable it to offer 4K video, optimised for the user’s device and available bandwidth. According to Vimeo, the introduction of adaptive streaming on Vimeo On Demand will make the latter the “largest open-access platform with 4K worldwide”.
Adaptive streaming will also be available on Apple TV and Vimeo’s iOS apps at launch. Vimeo’s full suite of apps including Amazon TV, Roku and Android, will be updated in the coming months. The company has also updated its video-editing app, Cameo by Vimeo, to support 4K videos shot on the new iPhone 6S and 6S Plus.
Vimeo empowers creators to make, share and sell their best work, and starting today, have that work played back in the highest resolution possible,” said Andrew Pile, CTO, Vimeo. “We launched 4K upload support for PRO members last year, and now, as we start to see more widespread adoption of 4K-enabled screens in the market, we’re excited to roll out adaptive streaming across Vimeo.”
