Naspers aims to head off Netflix with rival
Multichoice-owner Naspers is attempting to head of Netflix with a new SVOD service for the African market.
Multichoice’s pay TV service covers sub-Saharan Africa and local reports suggest Naspers is set to announce a new streaming service and launch ahead of Netflix.
US-based Netflix is rolling out internationally, and expected to hit South Africa this year or next. Various local reports suggest Naspers will attempt to launch ahead of the US giant.
A formal announcement is expected next Wednesday (August 19) with local press invited to a Naspers event, which promises details of an ‘innovative and exciting entertainment service’ for South Africa.
The invite to the event also references several US dramas including HBO’s True Blood and Showtime’s Ray Donovan, MGM’s Vikings (pictured) and Warner Bros.’ Big Bang Theory.
