Spotify could launch video unit, redistribute HBO Nordic
Online music service Spotify could be about to create a new video entertainment unit with HBO Nordic as its content partner, according to local reports.
Danish broadcaster TV2’s TV Beep site has reported that Spotify is in talks with HBO Nordic to redistribute its TV shows in the Nordic region. TV Beep cited unnamed sources as saying that Spotify planned to create a new division for TV and movies.
It is not yet clear if Spotify will launch a new platform or adapt its existing one, the site reported. It has been reported elsewhere that Spotify is developing a web client to enable the use of the service without the need to install dedicated software, enabling it to reach a wider audience.
In April Spotify hired Comcast product innovation chief Mike Berkley as vice-president of product. Berkley headed up Comcast’s X1 DVR project, working on new TV interfaces and mobile applications to facilitate content discovery. He was previously CEO of social TV pioneer SplashCast Media.
