BBC’s deputy DG made redundant

British public broadcaster the BBC has made deputy director general Mark Byford redundant. Byford, who has worked at the corporation since 1979, is expected to leave next summer. The move has come as part of wide ranging cuts as director general Mark Thompson pledged to make reductions “at every level” of the organisation.

“Obviously I will be very sad to leave this brilliant organisation that has been such a dominant part of my life for so long. But I know this decision is the right way forward. From a summer holiday job to head of all the BBC’s journalism – I have been fortunate and blessed to have had such a wonderful career at the BBC,” he noted in a memo to BBC staff.
