Canvas calls for device manufacturers’ proposals

Project Canvas, the UK connected TV joint-venture between the BBC, ITV, Channel 4, BT, TalkTalk and Arqiva, has invited expressions of interest from consumer equipment manufacturers interested in delivering Canvas-compatible devices next year.

The aim of the move is to build a broad base of manufacturers to support Canvas ahead of its planned launch in 2011.

The project’s initial focus is a twin-tuner digital-terrestrial IP-connected DVR, but Canvas has also said it will welcome responses from manufacturers proposing other devices including internet-enabled TVs and set-top boxes. Devices are expected to be made available both through retail channels and bundled with broadband packages.

Project Canvas director, Richard Halton said, “Canvas is stepping up its engagement with industry as we get closer to releasing the final set of technical documents to the DTG this month, and launching a consumer product next year.

Bringing on board further consumer equipment manufacturers will ensure people have the widest possible choice of devices and we remain focused on supporting the industry to stimulate a competitive market. We continue to work closely with the DTG to develop common standards for connected TV”.

The deadline for expressions of interest is August 25.
