Telefónica continues pay-TV growth

Spanish telco Telefónica increased its global pay-TV subscriber base by 15% to a total of 2.5 million in the 12 months to the end of September. Latin America continues to dominate the telco’s pay-TV business, where it has over 1.7 million TV customers, up 15.9% year-on-year. The company has pay-TV operations in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, the Czech Republic, Peru, Spain and Venezuela.

In Spain, the operator ended the third quarter with 654,000 pay-TV subs, up 11% on the previous year after adding 44,800 during the quarter. Telefónica put this down to an improved content offering, including the addition of football channel Gol TV. Almost 4.8 million Spanish customers took at least two services and more than 87% of retail broadband subscribers are now part of a double- or triple-play package. Telefónica España recorded third-quarter revenue of €4.9bn, down 8.9% year on year.

In the Czech Republic, Telefónica ended the third quarter with 135,854 O2 TV pay-TV subs, up 25.7% year-on-year.
The telco posted total third-quarter revenue of €14bn, down 5.7%.
