Switzerland’s Cablecom mulls CI Plus launch

Liberty Global-owned Swiss cable operator Cablecom is considering launching CI Plus modules to facilitate a retail model for set-top boxes.

Speaking at the Biel Bienne Communication Days event in Switzerland, Cablecom managing director Eric Tveter said that consumers needed to be given more choice, allowing them to watch content such as football matches on iPhones and HDTV screens. The company is considering CI Plus as part of its drive to meet customer demand for freedom of choice.

Tveter also said that competition between fixed line operators and between mobile operators was key to freedom of choice. He pointed out that Cablecom had spent over CHF1bn (€0.7bn) in developing its network and said there was a risk that local government support for fibre-to-the-home initiatives could distort competition.
